Come see my textile pieces PTSD – Fear and PTSD – Hopeless
Presentation and reception 8:00 p.m. April 8.
Shirl Chouinard, of Cambridge, MN was awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant to create six mixed media sculptures that investigate the techniques used in forensic examinations to establish legal evidence of a sexually violated subject. Working with a mentor, she will push her work to explore how the forensic examination affects the healing process.
"PTSD - Fear" was accepted into the Minnesota State Fair Art Show this year.
Shirl’s artwork focuses on family violence and sexual assault to increase awareness
throughout our communities. It is an issue that impacts millions worldwide and
leaves a long and devastating legacy. It generates pain and fear and its lingering
effects influence its victims through a lifetime, sometimes carrying on into the next
generation.
As a soft mixed media and textile artist, her work is a mixture of life size adult and
child dolls set into vignettes. Each are made from repurposed, reused, and recycled
products, goods and materials. Her intent is to define a voice about people who are,
in fact, rarely represented even though family violence and sexual assault is the
most pervasive yet least recognized human rights abuse in the world.
Money for Women is the oldest ongoing feminist granting agency.
This program supports and assists artists at various stages in their careers.
